Insurers raise $500k for seven charities

Leading organisations in Singapore’s insurance industry have joined forces to raise more than $500,000 for seven charities to commemorate the Republic’s 50th year of independence.
The General Insurance Association of Singapore, the Life Insurance Association and the Singapore Reinsurers’ Association organised a charity drive that started in April and ended yesterday with a special golf tournament – the SG50 Insurance Golf-Swing for Charity.
The seven charities to benefit from the initiative are the Children’s Cancer Foundation, National Kidney Foundation, Pertapis Education and Welfare Centre, Singapore Buddhist Free Clinic, Singapore Heart Foundation, St John’s Home for Elderly Persons and the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund.
The concluding event was a dinner held last night at the Singapore Island Country Club near Upper Thomson Road attended by Education Minister Heng Swee Keat, who presented cheques to the seven charities.
“This is a very special event in SG50 to raise funds,” Mr Heng said. He said he was heartened by how Singaporeans came together in the wake of Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s death, and in the aftermath of the Sabah earthquake, adding that he hoped to see the spirits of Singaporeans strengthened to build a better country and a better world.
